Everything You Need to Know About the Ineos Grenadier

If you factor out the Chinese manufacturers, it is rare to see an all-new automotive manufacturer enter the industry. Ineos is the latest player in the automotive sphere, and its first model to hit the market was the Grenadier. Ineos Grenadier resembles a classic Land Rover Defender, and it comes with built-in off-roading and overlanding abilities.

When you see the Ineos Grenadier, you can’t help but think the competition it faces are all established nameplates with immense heritage and history. Ford Bronco, the actual Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, and Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen are all direct competitors to the Ineos Grenadier. However, the Grenadier aims to cater to a niche segment in the market. Let’s see what the new off-roader has to offer.

    Who Makes Ineos Grenadier?

The name behind the brand is British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, the CEO of a chemical company with the same name, Ineos. He is also a classic Defender enthusiast. He loves the old Defenders so much that he offered Land Rover to buy the tooling to continue producing the classic off-roader. Land Rover refused the offer, so Ratcliffe proceeded to design his Defender homage from scratch. He went on to buy a French ex-Mercedes factory that used to produce the microcar Smart, and the whole project came to life.

    Ineos Grenadier Price

Let’s get the most important piece of info out of the way first. The Ineos Grenadier starts at $75,100. This is for the bare-bones Station Wagon Base trim level with no options and no destination fee. The Ineos Grenadier Trailmaster and Fieldmaster editions with no extra options start from $83,100. On the other hand, the pick-up version, the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster starts from $86,900 for the Base trim. Trialmaster and Fieldmaster editions of the pickup truck each start from $94,900.

Base trims for the station wagon and the pickup truck act as a blank canvas and you can spec them out exactly to your needs.

    Ineos Grenadier Trim Levels

The Base trim can be configured however you want; all of the features on the higher Fieldmaster and Trailmaster trim levels are offered as optional extras for the Ineos Grenadier Base Station Wagon and Quartermaster.

The Base comes with ample ground clearance and a capable transfer case, so the standard vehicle will mostly do the job unless you’re aiming for an all-out off-road monster. It comes with a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 with 8-speed automatic transmission, Recaro sport seats, vinyl/cloth upholstery, a 12.3-inch all-in-one touchscreen with navigation, automatic braking, and lane departure warning system.

Ineos Grenadier Trailmaster is aimed more at off-roading. It adds front and rear differential locks, a raised air intake, an access ladder, and all-terrain tires to the Base Grenadier. On the other hand, the Ineos Grenadier Fieldmaster aims at luxury and comfort. It basically adds 18-inch wheels, heated seats with leather upholstery, an access ladder, and safari windows on top of the Base version’s features.

    Ineos Grenadier Design

The Ineos Grenadier has an uncanny resemblance to the classic Land Rover Defender; it looks like a top-quality Defender restomod at first glance. However, closer inspection reveals the size difference; the Grenadier is sizeably bigger than the classic Defender. The styling cues to the old British off-roader are present and strong; a flat hood dominates the front fascia with round LED headlights. The rear end features a 30/70 split hatch door for the station wagon, and round LED tail lights.

Standard through all trim levels are an exterior utility belt, roof rails and strips, and tow hooks at both front and rear. Base and Trailmaster trims roll on black 17-inch steel wheels, and 18-incher steelies or alloys are optional while the Fieldmaster gets the 18s as standard. The Trailmaster comes with a snorkel-type air intake, and Fieldmaster comes with safari windows as standard. Fender-top plates, side steps, a roof-mounted LED lightbar, and more bits are optional throughout all trim levels, so you can create an overlander out of the factory with Ineos Grenadier.

    Ineos Grenadier Interior

Stepping inside, the Ineos Grenadier offers a spacious cabin thanks to its boxy exterior. The interior is aircraft-inspired, and all the controls are gathered right in the middle section of the dashboard. The upstanding dashboard features a plethora of manual switchgear, which makes all the difference for the better, as everyone is after touchscreen-this and touchscreen-that nowadays. All the buttons are chunky and easy to understand, as almost each comes with text clearly stating what each button does.

A rather large, 12.3” infotainment screen sits atop the dash and acts as a gauge cluster as well. There is a rotary knob to control the screen as an alternative of trying to touch the right spot every time you’re jumping around off-roading. Another aircraft-inspired control panel sits overhead and comprises auxiliary switches for various features. The cabin materials are high quality, durable, and solid but far from plush. Rather than being a luxury cabin, the interior is aimed toward being rock-solid for extreme conditions.

The Base Ineos Grenadier and the Trailmaster come with a cloth and vinyl mix upholstery, and leather is an optional extra. The Fieldmaster offers Nappa leather upholstery with heated seats as standard. Leather on the steering wheel, grab handles, and handbrake lever is standard on all trims.

    Ineos Grenadier Cargo and Space

Contrary to its size, the Ineos Grenadier has two-row seating. The trunk area is accessible through 30/70-split barn-style rear doors. With the second row in the upright position, the trunk space is 40 cu-ft, but you can increase it to 71 cu-ft when you fold the 60/40-folding rear seats. Ten tie rings are standard in the cargo space, and adaptable floor cargo rails are optional.

The two-row seating allows for a very spacious interior, and Ineos took advantage of this and added numerous storage spaces throughout the front-end of the cabin. There is a large glovebox compartment, door pockets, a lockable storage compartment in the center console, and two large cupholders upfront are some of them. Rear passengers only get bottle holders, as there are no cupholders for them.

    Ineos Grenadier Features and Tech

Ineos Grenadier comes with keyless entry, a tilt/telescope steering wheel column, manually adjustable Recaro sports seats, automatic HVAC, cruise control, and removable flooring with drain holes as standard in all trims. Leather is optional on Base and Trailmaster and standard on Fieldmaster. The latter also comes standard with seat heating, carpeted floors, and a compass/altimeter.

The dominating touchscreen is an all-in-one solution as it also acts as a gauge cluster. It can be controlled via the steering wheel buttons or a rotary knob instead of poking at the screen. The infotainment system runs on Ineos’ in-house software and comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, Bluetooth audio streaming, Sirius XM, and a three-mode navigation system that allows you to backtrack out in the wild. The Fieldmaster comes with an uprated audio system with a subwoofer, and the premium audio system is optional on lower trims.

    Ineos Grenadier Performance

    Ineos Grenadier Engine and Transmission

Under Ineos Grenadier’s hood lies a very familiar powerhouse. The engine is straight from BMW, the B58 3.0L turbocharged inline-six. But the tuning is conservative here; the unit makes 282 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. The power is distributed to a full-time all-wheel drive system through another familiar unit: ZF’s robust and quick-shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox. There are solid axles both up front and at the back, a dual-range transfer case, and a locking center differential. With over 6,000 pounds, the Grenadier is far from fast; the 0-60 mph sprint takes 8.6 seconds, and the top speed is governed at 99 mph.

    ###img_gal###18122024-2###img_gal###

The Grenadier may not be the quickest off-roader around, but the B58 is tuned so that it produces quite a remarkable amount of torque in the lower rev range. Combined with over 10 inches of ground clearance, dual-range transfer case, and robust underpinnings, the Ineos Grenadier is more than capable off the road. The Grenadier can also tow up to 7,716 lbs with its stock tow hook thanks to its low-down torque.

Ineos Grenadier MPG and Fuel Efficiency

Considering the sheer weight of the vehicle, its very unaerodynamic and boxy body, and the solid underpinnings that give it unmatched off-road capability, fuel economy is not a priority. Ineos Grenadier MPG figure is 15 MPG for city, highway, and combined cycles. The Trialmaster and all trim levels of the Quartermaster are slightly worse; they clock at 14 MPG because of the chunkier BF Goodrich off-road tires. The fuel tank capacity is 23.7 gallons, so Ineos Grenadier’s range is around 350 miles.

    Ineos Grenadier Reliability

It is too early to say anything about the Ineos Grenadier’s reliability as it is a fairly new models with no long-term experience. Some things are certain though: the ZF 8HP gearbox is a robust unit that causes no hassle in the long run. BMW’s B58 powerplant is another reliable unit, especially when properly maintained with original or high-quality aftermarket parts.

    Ineos Grenadier Upgrades

The Ineos Grenadier has a long list of optional extras, and it can be specced to be an all-out off-roader or an excellent base for an overlanding rig. It is a highly customizable vehicle right out of the dealership, but there is no doubt that there will be extensive aftermarket support for the Ineos Grenadier, too.

How to Improve Ineos Grenadier with Pedal Commander

Pedal Commander is the easiest and best Ineos Grenadier performance upgrade on the market today. The Pedal Commander throttle response controller connects to the Grenadier’s gas pedal assembly with OEM-style plugs and modifies the stock throttle signal. What Pedal Commander essentially does is alter the throttle signal so the electronic throttle valve opens up much faster than stock.

Pedal Commander is a plug-and-play upgrade that can be installed merely in minutes. You just have to unplug the stock throttle pedal connector and plug in the Pedal Commander harness. Then you mount the controller unit wherever you want in the Grenader’s cabin (as long as the cabling allows), and you’re ready to go.

The Pedal Commander throttle response controller offers complete throttle sensitivity customization. It comes with four preset driving modes: Eco, City, Sport, and Sport+. Each mode has nine increment levels, so you can adjust the select mode’s aggressiveness to suit your driving style and needs.

Eco Mode: Pedal Commander’s Eco mode reduces the throttle valve’s aggressiveness. This results in better fuel economy when combined with fuel-efficient driving habits. Or you can use the Eco mode as an off-road enhancer; a more controlled power delivery helps on slippery terrain or crawling over harsh surfaces where too much power might ruin traction.

City Mode: City mode offers a throttle feel reminiscent of cable throttles of the past. It smooths out power delivery and enables an instant throttle response. Pedal Commander’s City mode is perfect for driving through urban traffic or while towing a heavy trailer, as it completely eliminates the jerkiness of the power delivery.

Sport Mode: Pedal Commander’s Sport mode sharpens up the throttle response even more and makes your driving more thrilling. The Ineos Grenadier becomes more dynamic and engaging when the Sport mode is activated.

Sport+ Mode: This is the ultimate mode to overcome the Ineos Grenadier’s weight disadvantage. Sport+ eliminates all of the factory restrictions, giving your off-roader a razor-sharp throttle response. Whether you’re overtaking on the highway, or need raw power off the road, Pedal Commander’s Sport+ will transform the Ineos Grenadier’s driving characteristics.
