What is Scat Pack in Dodge’s Nomenclature?

Dodge is one of those manufacturers that enthusiastically name its cars or trim levels. While some brands rely on numbers, letters, or abbreviations, Dodge belongs to the opposite camp and stands out in the American automotive industry with some of the most interesting and exciting model names, monikers, and nicknames.

“Scat Pack” is one of those rather entertaining names with a bit of history to add to the fun. Initially, it was a marketing concept created for Dodge’s fastest muscle cars. Becoming a member of “the pack” required being able to run the quarter-mile in under 15 seconds. The original Scat Pack cars were the Charger R/T, Coronet R/T, and Dart GTS, and later, the Coronet-based Super Bee joined the pack.

Dodge even designed a logo for the group: A racing bee with a helmet and racing goggles on its head and car parts attached to its body. Along with the mascot, Dodge created a Scat Pack driver’s club to connect the owners. Members received newsletters about racing events, tuning tips, and other information about these specific cars. The Scat Pack campaign lasted until 1971.

Decades later, in the 2010s, Dodge decided to revive the name and debuted the new Scat Pack cars at the 2013 SEMA show. The new “pack” consisted of the Dart, Charger, and Challenger models, which received a tune with the Scat Pack treatment. By 2015, the name evolved to be a full-on trim level, filling the gap between the 5.7L HEMI R/Ts and the 7.0L near-800-horsepower Hellcats of the Charger and Challenger models.

Today, the top-tier Dodge muscle cars are the Hellcats, offering crazy amounts of power. However, Scat Pack cars deliver strong performance with their legendary HEMI V8s and deliver this at an affordable price tag compared to the top-of-the-line Dodges.

Dodge Charger Scat Pack and Challenger Scat Pack Engine Specs and Performance

Although the Charger and Challenger Scat Pack appear to be pretty much the same under their bodies, they still have slight differences. The biggest difference is that the Challenger can be had with a manual transmission, while the Charger is only available with an 8-speed auto.

The Dodge Challenger Scat Pack comes with two powertrain options. You can get it with the 392 cui (6.4-liter) SRT HEMI V8 engine mated to a 6-speed TREMEC manual transmission, or you can get it with the same 392 cui SRT HEMI, but this time with fuel saver technology if you opt for the 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

On the other hand, the Dodge Charger Scat Pack only comes with an automatic. You get the same 392 cui SRT HEMI MDS V8 engine with fuel saver technology, this time connected to an 8-speed 8HP70 tranny.

The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 in both cars produces 485 HP at 6,100 rpm and 475 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm. The engine catapults the cars to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.3 seconds. The quarter-mile times for the Scat Packs are around 12.5 seconds, with different trap speeds depending on the body and configuration.

Dodge Charger and Challenger Scat Pack Widebody

With the introduction of the Dodge Demon in 2018 came widebody styling in Dodge’s modern muscle car lineup. Soon after, in 2019, the brand applied the widebody treatment to the Challenger Scat Pack. In the following year, the option came to the Charger Scat Pack.

The widebody package includes 3.5-inch wider fender flares around bigger, 20x11-inch wheels that house larger, 6-pot Brembo brakes with 14-inch discs. Other body changes are the Hellcat front fascia for both models, a front splitter, and a rear spoiler. Widebody Scat Packs also feature a slightly lower and stiffer suspension, resulting in more high-speed stability.

    • Dodge Charger Scat Pack Widebody: $57,920
    • Dodge Challenger Scat Pack: $49,265

How Will the Future Shape for the Scat Pack Name?

Dodge will discontinue the legendary HEMI V8 engine lineup by the end of 2024. But the name “Scat Pack” is here to stay. The all-new, first electric muscle car, Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack will be available in late 2024. It will offer twin 335 HP electric motors and all-wheel drive. With a combined 670 HP, the car will accelerate from zero to 60 in just 3.3 seconds and aims for an 11.5 second quarter-mile time.
