WHAT IS THROTTLE LAG?

The Subaru Outback runs a drive-by-wire throttle system, like virtually every vehicle built in the last two decades. There is no physical cable connecting your gas pedal to the engine anymore. Instead, the accelerator sends an electronic signal that travels through the throttle position sensor, the ECU, and finally the throttle body before the engine actually responds.

That chain of communication introduces a delay. Subaru also programs a conservative throttle map from the factory to smooth out responses for a broad range of drivers, meet EPA targets, and protect the CVT gearbox if the vehicle is equipped with one. This adds a layer of hesitation before engine output translates into actual acceleration. This is called throttle lag.

HOW DOES PEDAL COMMANDER® IMPROVE THE SUBARU OUTBACK?

The basic steps of the Pedal Commander® installation are always the same regardless of the vehicle's make and model:

Turn off the ignition and wait 10-15 minutes with your driver's door open to allow your ECU to shut down.

Disconnect your accelerator pedal assembly plug, then plug in the heads to connectors on the Pedal Commander® harness.

Clean up the area where you want to mount the control unit with the alcohol wipe. Stick the bracket with the supplied velcro.

After you make sure the cables are secure and won't be tangled, you are ready to enjoy Pedal Commander®.

This is the second Pedal Comander that I've purchased. The first one was for my 05 Legacy GT Wagon with a Stage 2 race long block. That first Pedal Comander sinked up with no issues and I was pleasantly surprised with the snappy throttle response. This most recent purchase was one for my 21 Outback Turing XT and no suprize it to rocks. When spending $270.00 plus for a controller you want thing to work as advertised- theses DO!

Subaru's somewhat anemic 2.5 liter boxer in my 2025 Outback really came to life when I put my Pedal Commander on "City". 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness After 5,000 miles I still liked the car, but hated the CVT and the way it drives, turbo lag, and the crappy transmission. Pro's: - Removed CVT shuttering w/ Subi Outback Wilderness. - Improved responsiveness at speed. - Easy to install. Less than 10 minutes. Con's: - Didn't add any more responsiveness from a full stop. May be due to turbo winding up. - No difference from default City to +4 Sport +. Overall: - The removal of CVT shuttering and responsiveness at speed is well worth it. CVT shuttering is not a good thing for longevity. If you need to pass on 2 lane roads, this will make it quicker. This device doesn't do an engine tune, it just adjusts the throttle voltages, which is something that should be a dealer option.

We love our 2016 Subaru Outback, but the throttle initially comes on too fast on our 3.6L engine. You have to be very gentle on the pedal when you initially accelerate. Saw a blog about Pedal Commander and decided to give it a try. I've had it for a few weeks and I can't believe the difference in throttle response at different settings. The change from Econ to Sport is really amazing. This fixed one of the few complaints with the car.

My 22 Subaru outback touring xt 2.5 suffers greatly from to much turbo lag to the extreme of dashing away from a dead stop no matter how much I try and get a happy medium it's impossible pedal commander had alleviated alleviated 85-90% of that issue... I have my device set in economy mode and my take offs and such are MUCH MORE TAME I'm very glad I heard about the pedal commander!

A few week ago I purchased a 2022 Outback Wilderness w/Turbo. I felt that the transmission was constantly jerking around, mainly when accelerating from a stop or slow speed. The Pedal Commander gives the user the opportunity to customize the throttle response of his vehicle and for people like me who are unhappy with how their car drives, this is a Godsend. One of the most irritating things about my new car's throttle by wire is a dead flat lag shortly off the line, one that kills performance so bad you have to hit passing gear to get the car moving. Pedal Commander has opened up that box and allowed me to virtually tune out this flat spot which makes the car much easier to drive. Would it be better if the car manufacturer tuned the throttle better or even offered a knob so the driver could choose his car's operating attitude? Yes, it would. In lieu of that happening this little device does a wonderful job and I'm thankful I tried it out. Pedal Commander has been on top of communication and their help is only an email or phone call away, though the unit is so easy to install and use I doubt many will need the assistance. My only suggestion to PC would be to offer up a visual chart with graphs that represent what each mode on the unit does. Show us visually how each mode looks as compared to the other modes. This would make it easier to see how the unit is designed to work and would help the user to find a starting point when installing the unit as well as what direction his next setting change should be.

I had to get this for my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness. It did not do much initially, but I sent an email to reprogram the unit to make it a lot more aggressive. Within less than 24 hours they sent me an update via bluetooth using the Pedal Commander App and this updated my actual unit. The reprogramming made a lot of difference. I’m only using Sport (0) and it’s more than enough for the Wilderness. I’m happy with the result. Awesome customer service too! I highly recommend them!
