Here's the short answer: R/T stands for Road and Track. Dodge's own FAQ page spells it out plainly, stating that the badge indicates a vehicle has the performance features needed to compete in street and track racing. Simple as that.
Most Common R/T Misconceptions
A lot of gearheads confuse it with “Rapid Transit”, and honestly, it's an easy mistake. Plymouth, Dodge's corporate sibling under the old Chrysler umbrella, used the term "Rapid Transit System" to market its muscle cars back in the 1970s. The names sound similar and came from the same era, so the confusion stuck around for decades.
R/T also has nothing to do with "Racing Technology." That mix-up probably comes from SRT, a totally separate badge that stands for Street and Racing Technology. SRT models sit above R/T models in Dodge's performance lineup, which doesn't help the confusion either. And no, it's not Rally Touring or Racing Team, even though both have been floated by fans over the years trying to make sense of two letters and a slash.
Where R/T Badging Started
R/T made its debut on the 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T, a serious performance car that could be ordered with a 440 cubic inch Magnum V8 pushing 375 horsepower, or the legendary 426 Hemi good for 425 horses. A year later, in 1968, the Charger got its own R/T trim, borrowing the Coronet's platform and its badge.
That second generation Charger R/T became a cultural icon almost overnight. It squared off against Steve McQueen's Mustang in "Bullitt," served as the getaway car in "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry," and later became Dom Toretto's signature ride in the first "Fast and the Furious" movie. With the 426 Hemi under the hood, that car could hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and top out around 156 mph. These numbers are impressive even for today.
R/T Spreads Beyond the Charger
Once R/T proved itself as a badge people recognized and wanted, Dodge didn't keep it locked to the Charger. Over the years it showed up on the Challenger, Durango, Journey, and even the Grand Caravan, always signaling a step up in power, handling, or both.
The Durango R/T, for example, has carried a 5.7-liter Hemi in the past and today's R/T 392 version is rated to tow up to 8,700 pounds, useful if you need serious muscle with room for the family.
What R/T Means Today
Dodge still uses the badge, and it's alive and well on the current Charger lineup. For 2026, R/T sits as the base performance trim on the reborn Charger, now running a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six instead of the classic V8. It's a different kind of muscle than what Mopar fans grew up with, but the output numbers hold their own: 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque, enough to send the car from 0 to 60 in about 4.6 seconds.
Buyers can also step up to an R/T Plus package, which layers on comfort features like heated and ventilated seats, upgraded lighting, and a 360-degree camera system without touching the engine.
A V8 Hellcat variant is expected to return to the Charger lineup down the road, but as of now there's no confirmed word on whether it will wear the R/T badge. It will be SRT material, probably.
