The 6th gen 4Runner is a complete reimagining of the platform. New fully boxed frame, new turbocharged powertrains, and Toyota's first-ever 4Runner hybrid in the i-Force Max. 2.7L, 4.0L V6

The 5th gen 4Runner is one of the most beloved off-road platforms ever built. Fifteen years of the same proven 4.0L V6, body-on-frame construction, and an aftermarket ecosystem that's as deep as any in the off-road world. TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, and Trail Edition trims made the 5th gen a factory off-road vehicle that could go almost anywhere with minimal upgrades, and the community that grew around it took it even further. Throttle lag on the 5th gen is one of a few drawbacks, especially among owners who have upgraded to larger tires, lifted suspensions, and heavier recovery gear. The added weight makes the factory throttle response feel even more sluggish than stock. Pedal Commander®'s calibration for the 5th gen's 4.0L V6 eliminates that lag and restores the direct, responsive feel the engine is capable of. 4.0L V6, 4.7L V8

The 4th gen 4Runner brought the 4.0L V6 and drive-by-wire throttle management to the platform. And with it, the conservative factory ECU mapping that holds back every modern 4Runner. These trucks have a long-standing reputation for durability and off-road capability, and many are still active as daily drivers, weekend trail rigs, and overland builds. Lifted on 33s or 35s, outfitted with skid plates and roof racks, or kept close to stock, the 4th gen 4Runner is still earning its keep. Pedal Commander® is fully compatible with the 4th gen's 4.0L V6 across all trim levels. Installation is a plug-and-play process; no tools, 15 minutes, fully reversible. The result is immediate throttle response that makes the truck feel sharper on the road and more precise on the trail.

WHAT IS THROTTLE LAG?

Starting from the N210-generation (2003-2009), modern 4Runners use a drive-by-wire system, there's no mechanical cable between the gas pedal and the throttle body. The gas pedal sends an electronic signal to the ECU, which processes the input and decides how much throttle to apply and when to apply it.

Toyota programs the sensor signal conservatively, tuned to balance fuel economy, emissions targets, and the broadest possible range of driving conditions. But that restriction causes an unwelcome throttle lag. On technical terrain, it's a real problem. When the gas pedal input and engine response aren't in sync, precise throttle modulation becomes almost impossible, and on a serious trail, that lag is the difference between a clean run and a recovery situation.

The Pedal Commander® throttle response controller eliminates that lag. It intercepts the signal between the gas pedal and the ECU, remaps the response using 4Runner-specific software, and delivers the throttle sensitivity you choose, not what Toyota decided was conservative enough for the average commuter.

The basic steps of the Pedal Commander® installation are always the same regardless of the vehicle's make and model:

Turn off the ignition and wait 10-15 minutes with your driver's door open to allow your ECU to shut down.

Disconnect your accelerator pedal assembly plug, then plug in the heads to connectors on the Pedal Commander® harness.

Clean up the area where you want to mount the control unit with the alcohol wipe. Stick the bracket with the supplied velcro.

After you make sure the cables are secure and won't be tangled, you are ready to enjoy Pedal Commander®.

When having my 2024 4Runner serviced at the dealership, I mentioned to the service adviser how sluggish it was at times and he recommended that I get a Pedal Commander. Within a few days of ordering the product arrived and i was excited to start the installation which was easy and only took a few minutes. I do recommend that you disconnect the negative terminal of the battery prior to doing any work and use a pair of electrical disconnect pliers to help remove the pigtail from the gas pedal. I settled on the City mode + 2. If you want to wake up your ride I highly recommend the Pedal Commander!

Took the lag completely out of my 2024 Toyota 4Runner. Much better throttle response. Wakes the truck up nicely, without breaking the bank. I’ve used this on my 2015 Tacoma and it worked wonders. To all those who say dumb shit like “it doesn’t make the truck faster” or “just press the throttle down more” you have no idea how this actually works. It speeds up the throttle blade opening by showing it more voltage. It’s actually crisper than just holding down the throttle. I have something similar on my C8 corvette.

Seems to be working well. MPH has increased by 2 in city mode. One complaint and I keep seeing it is the Velcro. It is very cheap Velcro. If they plan to sell to people who use it in hot areas of the country supply extremely Velcro. May cost them .50 more but for a $300 unit that’s a small price. Contacted customer service and they keep saying buy more Velcro from us. If the supplied ones failed in a few hours why buy the and again!!!

Single best plug and play upgrade ever!! What a difference the Pedal Commander made for my 23 4Runner. With a number of modes and settings it was easy to tune to my driving patterns. Would definitely recommend to fix the 4Runners slow pedal response.

Pedal Commander for Toyota four Runner easy installation less than 10 minutes. Throttle response is incredible. You don’t really know the difference until you get one of these things instant with four different modes, Eco city sport and sport plus there are several options for your offloading experience may it be rock, crawling, or fire roads. Definitely worth getting one of these performances incredible.

I am 71 and apparently didn't have the finger strength to depress the locking clip on the accelorator plug enough to release the plug. I even bought some electrical plug plyers but you can't get them into position to use them so don't waste your money on those. I had a friend who is about 20 years younger come by and disconnect the plug for me. After that, installation was a snap. I have found that you can change the settings while driving if you wait to fo it while you are stopped and your foot isn't on the accelorator. The change is instantanious. Before the Pedal Commander was installed, I was getting about 16 MPG on my 2019 4Runner. I have found that I like City +3 best for my driving style but my MPG went down to about 14. I bumped the setting back to City +2 and I am back to about 16 MPG. Your driving style will effect this more than anything. With the inproved response on the throttle you will have to retrain your foot so you aren't goosing it every time you want to go. In short time, you will get used to that and everything will smooth out again. I highly recommend the Pedal Commander and what it can do to your ride.
