    It was the mid-80s, and BMW engineer Max Reisböck faced a personal problem: His family was growing larger, and the family’s E30 sedan couldn’t provide enough practicality. His weekend getaways with the family and their luggage were pushing the limits of the little sedan. However, there was another problem: Reisböck did not want to sacrifice the dynamic handling and driving pleasure his BMW E30 offered for extra trunk space.

    At the time, BMW had no plans to build a practical station wagon version of the 3 Series, but for Reisböck, this was an opportunity. He was determined to come up with his own solution and wanted to create a more practical version of the car he was so passionate about—in his garage! He used an accident-damaged E30 sedan as a base for his home-made project and began transforming it into what would eventually become the E30 Touring.

    A DIY Job That Convinced BMW

    It took Reisböck only six months to extend his sedan’s roof, construct the rear end, and craft a good-looking prototype that offered enough practicality while retaining the design elements of the original sedan. He had limited tools and support from only a few colleagues, but Reisböck managed to create a car that looked as though it came straight from BMW’s production line.

    When Reisböck presented his custom-made E30 Touring to BMW management, they were initially skeptical. Still, the prototype impressed the board of directors with its perfect blend of style and utility while offering the performance and dynamism BMW has always been famous for. Executives realized the station wagon's market potential and greenlit the project.
